Thomas Edison Elementary School and Fernando Rivera Intermediate School share a common entrance and parking area. The existing site presented several operational and safety challenges, including the absence of a designated student drop-off area, limited staff and visitor parking, inadequate campus security, and no accessible route from the street to either school. In addition, Fernando Rivera Intermediate School’s main office was located in the middle of campus, creating security and supervision concerns for visitors entering school grounds.

The site improvement project addressed these issues comprehensively through a series of coordinated upgrades serving both campuses. Key components of the new scope included:

-
New Secure Perimeter: Installation of a fenced boundary around the shared campus to improve student safety and controlled access.
-
Accessibility Improvements: Construction of a 200' ADA compliant ramp providing an accessible pathway from the street level to both school entrances.
-
Traffic and Parking Improvements: Development of a new student drop-off zone, expanded visitor parking located beneath a photovoltaic (PV) canopy, and a new 71-space staff parking lot designed to serve both schools efficiently.
-
Thomas Edison Elementary Upgrades: Installation of two new shade structures, relocation of the playground area with updated markings, and the addition of new outdoor recreation equipment including tetherball and volleyball courts.
-
Fernando Rivera Intermediate Upgrades: Creation of a new secure courtyard entry in anticipation of the Main Office Relocation Project later completed to improve campus supervision and safety, along with a new outdoor dining area adjacent to the cafeteria.

Together, these improvements have enhanced accessibility and safety across both campuses, creating a more secure, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
